Competition Rules

1

Competitions are only open to fully paid up members or honorary members of the Society.

2

All entries for any slide competition should be handed to the competition secretary (or their appointed understudy) the week before the competition and should be spotted in the left hand corner when viewed correctly. The entry should be titled and show the entrant's name.

 3

The title for any print competition should be handed to the competition secretary (or their appointed understudy) not later than the week before the competition. Titles can also be given to the competition secretary over the phone (last day for entries will be the Friday before the competition). All prints should be clearly titled and have the entrant's name on the reverse of the mount.

 4

Where the competition is a theme competition, entries are restricted to a total of four slides and/or prints per entrant with one of the prints being nominated to be excluded if there are too many entries. The trophy winners in the theme competition will be the entrants who score the highest combined marks when their two highest scores in each heat are added together, the print and slide scores will be kept separate to give a winner in each format. In the event of a tie the entrant's third highest score will be used to obtain a winner.

 5

The Slide of the Year and the Print of the Year competitions are open to any images that have not received an award in any of the Society's previous competitions. The same or similar image should not be entered as a print, slide or digital image in the same year's competition.

 6

The Natural History Competition will cover all flora and fauna. The title of each image should contain the name of the animal/bird/plant. An entry will consist of up to six slides and/or up to four prints per member. The winner of the print section and slide section will each hold the trophy for six months.

 7

The Print of the Year competition is open to colour and monochrome prints with one colour allowed in the mono images. A member can enter up to four prints in each section with one from each section being nominated to be excluded if there are too many entries. Prints must be handed to the Competition Secretary no later than the week before the competition in order that they can be presented to the judge on his arrival on the night of the competition. (Entries will be accepted up to Friday evening at the home of the Competition Secretary).

 8

The Slide of the Year competition entry may consist of up to six slides per entrant.

 9

The Landscape competition is split into two sections, slides and prints. A member can enter up to six slides and up to four prints.

 10

In order to encourage photography no image more than five years old should be entered in a club competition. New members will, however, be granted 12 months grace before having to comply with this rule.

 11

Any matters not covered by these rules will be at the judge's discretion.

 DIGITAL COMPETITION RULES

The Society has launched a digital competition this season, the competition replaced one of the theme competitions and was an open subject. The date of the competition was January 12th 2009. The Society rules will be updated to cover this competition at a later date, as it is a new venture we will see how the first competition goes before adding this competition to the rules.

Below is the basic format for the competition:
  1. The competition is open to any image which has not previously won an award in a Society print or slide competition.
  2. Each Entrant may enter up to four images which one image being nominated to be excluded if there are too many entries.
  3. The images should be .jpeg format and sized to a maximum 1024 x 768 pixels. This means in landscape format the maximum width must be 1024 pixels by up to 768 pixels high. In portrait format the maximum height must be 768 pixels.
  4. The image file must be titled, followed by the photographer's name, the image nominated to be excluded must be clearly marked with an x after the title.
  5. Entries can be made on a cd, memory stick or emailed to the competition secretary at birdhouse91@tiscali.co.uk. All entries must be received before Friday prior to the competition.

Some important points to note about this year's competitions

The slide competitions have been replaced by digital projected competitions. This is because there doesn't seem to be anyone at the club producing slides for competitions and the entries into last year's competitions comprised of older slides or recent ones produced from digital files.

The theme competitions will still be in two sections: one for prints and the other for digital projected images.

The slide of the year competition is now called "Projected Image of the Year" and the Landscape Slide competition is now called "Lanscape Projected Image".

The theme competitions for this year are Water - which covers anything from a droplet to an ocean, so there's plenty of scope there! The other which is Dusk Till Dawn can cover anything between sunset and sunrise so bring on your best night shots, firework displays, floodlit buildings etc.
